The Kyushu region has an area of 44,514 sq.km(About the same as Switzerland), accounting for 11.2% of Japan's total area, and a population of 14,480,000(11% of national total), 10.6% of Japan's total population. The island is noted for various types of porcelain, including Arita, Imari, Satsuma, and Karatsu. Heavy industry is concentrated in the north around Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, and Oita and includes chemicals, automobiles, semiconductors, and metal processing.
