Kitakyushu city gov’t set to help Vietnamese city with “green growth” program

(NNA) – The Kitakyushu city government is poised to help the city government of Haiphong in northern Vietnam launch a so-called “green growth” program designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while securing sustainable economic growth. The Kitakyushu city government will engage in the Vietnamese city’s urban-development project from the very start of its drafting, a move the Japanese local government hopes will eventually help local companies in Kitakyushu promote their overseas business. The two city governments signed an agreement to establish a sister city relationship on April 18.

The Kitakyushu city government’s support project was adopted as a Japanese government-backed project that conducts a feasibility study on major projects using the so-called Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). The Japanese Ministry of the Environment sought applications for the project aimed at realizing low-carbon societies in Asia. The project will be conducted for one year through March 2015. The Kitakyushu city government will use the so-called “Kitakyushu Model” – a methodology including a tool kit for urban planning of environment-conscious cities – to help Haiphong city secure sustainable growth.
