The Kyushu region has an area of 44,514 sq.km(About the same as Switzerland), accounting for 11.2% of Japan's total area, and a population of 14,480,000(11% of national total), 10.6% of Japan's total population. The gross regional product of the Kyushu region was 571.7 Billion USD (on par with GDP in Sweden, and about 9.6% of the national total in Japan). Comparing the gross regional product of the Kyushu region with the GDP of countries throughout the world, Kyushu's was more than that of Belgium, which ranked the 17th in the world. Parts of Kyushu have a subtropical climate, particularly Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. Major agricultural products are rice, tea, tobacco, sweet potatoes, and soy; silk is also widely produced. The island is noted for various types of porcelain, including Arita, Imari, Satsuma, and Karatsu. Heavy industry is concentrated in the north around Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, and Oita and includes chemicals, automobiles, semiconductors, and metal processing.
