Strong & Fashionable Bag Used Japanese Traditional Sail Canvas
Matsuemon ho(mast of a sailing vessel) was developed by Kuraku Matsuemon who was born in Takasago near Himeji in Middle of the Edo era(1743).
In 1785, he woven a piece of canvas by thick thread, and made it compatible with thickness and robustness with tried and error. That canvas is flexible, catch a lot of wind, good drainage, light, and very strong. The sail got a great reputation, it naturally came to be called his name “Matsuemon”, and quickly spread to the sailors at the time.
The era became the Meiji era, the sailing ship decreased the number and also the production of canvas. However, the quality canvas technology will be used to make bags. Those bags are manufactured in Toyooka which is the production base of world famous bags.
Our bag is a wonderful bag which took advantage of the characteristics of the light and durable Matsuemon ho(Canvas).
