Instant ramen, the Shinkansen bullet train and Manga animation have been selected as some of Japan’s greatest technological innovations since the end of World War Two. The Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation has so far selected 38 technologies that have contributed to industrial and economic growth…as well as the overall improvement of life in Japan.

Shigeru Ban has designed museums, homes and concert halls. But Ban is best known for a more humble kind of work: The temporary structures he’s built for refugees and evacuees all over the world.

UNESCO picks Japanese cuisine as cultural heritage

UNESCO has added Japanese cuisine and food culture to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The world body’s intergovernmental committee made the decision at a meeting in Azerbaijan on Wednesday. Japan filed an application with UNESCO in March last year, following a request by a Japanese civic group.
