TOKYO – Washoku World Challenge Executive Committee, runs the Washoku World Challenge, a cooking contest in which Japanese cuisine chefs from around the world compete in technical expertise and passion for Japanese food, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. On Feb. 13th-14th, 2018, six finalists from 5 countries and regions gathered for the final tournament held in Tokyo, and David Israelow (private chef) from the United States won 1st Place. The second place was a tie between two contestants, Christopher Brian Massad (Tankuma Kitamise) from the United States and Daniele Codini (The Ned London) from Italy.

TOKYO, Sept. 26, 2017 — On September 18 (Monday), 2017, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) held a reception promoting the appeal of Japanese regional cuisine, titled “Taste of Japan — Endless Discovery,” in conjunction with an appearance by His Excellency Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan. With some 200 invitees, including members of the U.S. food services industry, international travel services, U.S. and Japanese diplomatic corps, members of the United Nations and others, the event aimed to promote the spread of Japan tourism as well as Japanese food and cuisine culture around the world.

UNESCO picks Japanese cuisine as cultural heritage

UNESCO has added Japanese cuisine and food culture to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The world body’s intergovernmental committee made the decision at a meeting in Azerbaijan on Wednesday. Japan filed an application with UNESCO in March last year, following a request by a Japanese civic group.
