9:15 Lecture: What Made Silicon Valley Synonymous with Business Success? Vision of Future Medical Devices and Healthcare
Dr. John B. Simpson has revolutionized the field of medicine through innovations that have fundamentally altered how physicians treat cardiovascular disease. He invented and commercialized the first over-the-wire balloon catheter used for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Dr. Simpson’s unique approach to patient care and the success of less invasive interventional techniques, specifically PTCA, have generated a multi-disciplinary shift in medicine as ophthalmologists, radiologists, cardiologists, neurologists and surgeons alike have adopted this technique.
- Lecturer: John B. Simpson MD, PhD
- Introduction: Fumiaki Ikeno (Program Director (U.S.) Japan Biodesign, Stanford Biodesign)
9:50 Panel Discussion 1: Trends of Medical Devices “Digital Health, IoT, AR/VR, and Wearable” – Set to Change the Face of Healthcare
As the area of medical devices, e.g., digital health, IoT, connected health, AR/VR, and wearable, has been drastically expanding in recent years, the roles and boundaries of such devices may no longer be defined. In this panel discussion, we suggest methods of functionality-focused medical device development as well as potentials to deliver better healthcare services by analyzing data obtained via such medical devices, that will lead to better quality and lower cost of healthcare. Especially, the following three sectors are focused on: early diagnosis of disease; management care of chronic disease; and follow-up monitoring after acute disease incidence.
- Moderator: Jeff Trost (President & Founder, Voler Systems)
- Panelists: Walt Maclay (CEO, Voler Systems), Jim McDonnell (CEO, Kenzen) and Sam Yang (CEO, Kardian)
10:55 Panel Discussion 2: Japan’s Healthcare System Challenges
Japan seeks solutions to realize more sustainable and feasible healthcare systems, preparing for radical changes in society and healthcare, such as medical cost increases associated with age progression and implementation for advanced medical technology; and working-age population decline. The year 2018 becomes a landmark year as simultaneous revisions of medical service and long-term care fees have taken effect. In this panel discussion, we identify the challenges facing Japan and highlight the government measures as well as the best methods to address the issues in the industry.
- Moderator: Takahiro Uchida (Founder and CEO, Japanese Organization for Medical Device Development)
- Panelists: Tatsufumi Aoyama (Director of Healthcare Industry Office, Development Bank of Japan), Masamoto Yuhide (Director of Iizuka Hospital), Satoru Miyano (Director, Human Genome Analysis Center, Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo) and Yamamoto Koji (Executive Officer, Social Welfare Executive Committee)
12:00 Panel Discussion 3: Outlooks of Development Needs in a Super-aged Society
Japan has the largest percentage of total population ages 65 and above in the world, and the US marks as the second largest. The incidence of chronic and aging diseases in seniors naturally rises. In both countries, the medical systems are well-developed, including medical treatments, and healthcare equipment and services. In this panel discussion, we focus on potential development needs and solutions along with the acceleration of a super-aged society.
- Moderator: Yasuko Akutsu (President and CEO, MT Healthcare Design Research)

Pharma Valley Project
Shizuoka boasts the greatest production value of pharmaceuticals and medical devices in all of Japan, and there are also many pharmaceutical, medical supply factories and research facilities in the eastern region area. In recent years, the accumulation of medical and health industries has advanced in Shizuoka, and the shipment value of chemicals and medical equipment is top class domestically.
In 2001, Shizuoka launched the Pharma Valley Project to develop a medical district / medical care in collaboration with residents, industry, academia, and government, castle-town centered around the Shizuoka Cancer Center.
The goal of the Pharma Valley Project is to strive to achieve the longest healthy living region of Japan, through “improving health standards and overcoming illnesses” and “establishing economic fundamentals for residents” with cutting-edge technology in the local industry. With a focus on vitalizing the region, developing the products, meeting the needs of patients and families, the project has led to positive results.
